In 1976 MCHC opened a medical clinic in the old Daniel Boone Hotel building in Whitesburg, KY. This would later become MCHC’s flagship clinic. The building served it's purpose well for many years. The Whitesburg

Medical/Dental Clinic was serving around 300 patients a day with no parking, poor plumbing and other problems one might expect with an old building. MCHC secured the funding to build a new facility. A new building was constructed on the former Whitesburg Industrial Site.

In 1996 the MCHC Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic opened at its current location, a 75,000 sq. ft. state of the art medical clinic.

The MCHC Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic offers the full range of primary care services: Optometry, Dental, Behavioral Health, Family and Internal Medicine, OB/GYN care, Pediatrics, as well as selected specialty services, such as Pulmonology.

The Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic houses the MCHC Respiratory Clinic, which provides quality care to a population of high incidence of pulmonary problems, such as Black Lung.

The range of services available to patients at the Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic in addition to primary and preventive health care includes Pulmonary therapy and rehabilitation program; a full service Laboratory that performs procedures of high complexity and a Radiology program.

A key element in the Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic’s success over the years has been its ability to recruit and retain highly competent, committed professionals, promoting the development of homegrown talent in the health professions and encouraging them to return to their home region following completion of their training.

The Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic continues to have a vital role in delivering high quality medical care to the people of Letcher County and surrounding counties.

The Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic has a sliding scale fee payment plan based on current Federal Poverty Guidelines. This ensures quality and affordable health care to everyone in our service area. No one is denied healthcare due to inability to pay.

Harlan, KY 40831

In July 2004, Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation opened the Harlan Medical Center in

Harlan, Kentucky. MCHC renovated a former grocery store into a modern health facility. The clinic offers quality Family Practice and OB/GYN medical care with on-site Laboratory, X-ray, and Mammography services as well as a new Optometry department.

Our clinic has evolved over the course of three years. It has continued to grow in order to meet the needs of our patients. Our medical providers are all from the local area who have chosen to return here to provide healthcare to their family, friends and home communities.

We have many programs that help our patients. We offer the sliding scale fee for those who met the Federal poverty guidelines. We also help our patients who need assistance with the application process of obtaining Black Lung benefits as well as those who need assistance with medications.

Our staff is very dedicated to our community and work together to provide the quality healthcare our patients deserve.

Leatherwood/Blackey Medical Clinic

606-476-2593

464 KY Highway 699

Cornettsville, KY 41731

The MCHC Leatherwood/Blackey Clinic was started because there was great need for health care in rural Perry County. The nearest hospital was about 45 minutes away and people in the area chose to bring emergency

care closer to home.

In 1975, the Leatherwood/Blackey Clinic’s first offices were temporarily set up in a trailer at Slemp, KY. A growing patient load soon required a larger building. A new building was built in 1976 at Cornettsville, KY. The center sets on a two-acre site which was purchased from Irene and Denver Miniard for the sum of $10,000. The Miniard’s saw that there was a great need for ground to build the new clinic on. Even though it was a part of the Miniard Farm, they agreed to sell this piece of land so all the people in the area would have better access to health care.

The patient load continued to grow requiring the addition of an Emergency room, more treatment rooms, a Radiology Department and Dental offices which were added in 1999. A year later in 2000, a Wellness center was constructed. This addition was made to meet the needs of the patients in helping them to approach health care in another way, by adding exercise to their overall health care outlook.

The clinic physicians treat the healthcare needs of around 13,000 patients per year. The patients come from Letcher, Perry, Knott, Harlan and Leslie counties, with the majority of the patients coming from Letcher and Perry counties. The offering of a sliding pay scale makes the location of the clinic even more attractive to patients, especially those that are uninsured. The clinic also leases space to an on-site pharmacy, and East Kentucky Physical Therapy.

The enormous need for quality healthcare in the southern part of Perry and Letcher counties was met with the opening of the Leatherwood/Blackey Clinic. Government funding also supported the need for such a facility in the area. The clinic’s outreach continues to grow, and with caring physicians and a dedicated staff, quality healthcare has become a reality, not just a dream.

The Leatherwood/Blackey Clinic has a sliding scale fee payment plan based on current Federal Poverty Guidelines. This ensures quality and affordable health care to everyone in our service area. No one is denied healthcare due to inability to pay.

Owsley County Medical/Dental Clinic

606-593-6395

826 KY Highway 11 North

Booneville, KY 41314

Owsley County is a core county of the eastern Kentucky hill country, but it was historically a small-scale farming area, not a coal-mining county. The population today is only half as large as it was in 1940. With a child poverty

owsley314x235.jpg

rate of 55 percent and a total poverty rate of 45 percent, an eastern Kentucky healthcare company (MCHC) was influenced to make a difference.

In October 1983, Lois Baker, CEO of Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation (MCHC) extended her commitment of providing quality health care services to the residents of Owsley County and surrounding counties by opening the Owsley County Medical/Dental Clinic in Booneville, Kentucky. Owsley County was without medical treatment for almost a year before the clinic opened. The desperate lack of health care forced many residents to travel to adjacent counties for medical care. Many of the residents, especially the elderly, had neither the financial resources nor the transportation to permit them to obtain medical services outside the county which posed a hardship on them. With a steadily increasing patient load, the clinic moved to a new facility on April 12, 1999 on Route 11 next to the Owsley County Post Office. The new facility consisted of a Wellness Center, new Laboratory and X-ray equipment. Recently, a new Dental department has been opened at the clinic and a new Optometry department will be opening soon.

Owsley County Medical/Dental Clinic is now a medical practice consisting of one primary care physician, three nurse practitioners, and 20 employees whose mission is to utilize all available resources to provide affordable, quality health care to those persons residing in its service area and especially to those individual residents who are medically under-served. A sliding scale fee program is available to those patients who meet federal guidelines. The sliding scale fee program is based upon the family’s income; patients may receive care at a significantly reduced rate. As a community oriented clinic, we feel it is our duty to see all patients regardless of their ability to pay for services. By providing the sliding scale fee program we assure that all persons are available to receive health care. The clinic also accepts most insurances.

The clinic’s motto is to exceed the expectations of the patients we serve. We want patients to believe that we have their best interests at heart, providing a range of care to their entire family. Owsley County Medical Clinic has seen many changes over the years, but our main goal of providing quality health care to our patients will never change. Our mission is to provide state of the art medical services which meet the health care needs of our patients. We are dedicated to the highest professional standards, cost effective quality care and compassionate delivery of services through the cooperative efforts of our physicians and staff.

The Owsley County Medical/Dental Clinic is an asset to the area as well as a source of pride for Owsley County.

Owsley County Medical/Dental Clinic has a sliding scale fee payment plan based on current Federal Poverty Guidelines. This ensures quality and affordable health care to everyone in our service area. No one is denied healthcare due to inability to pay.

Buckhorn Medical Clinic

72 Buckhorn Clinic Road

Buckhorn, KY 41721

Buckhorn Medical Clinic is located in a very rural, remote, and beautiful section of Northwestern Perry County We were first licensed as a Rural Health Clinic in May 1974, set up in two mobile homes provided by the

Department of H.E.W., and staffed by a solo Nurse Practitioner provided by the National Health Service Corp.

Buckhorn Children’s Center donated land to be used for the facility and numerous people gave of their time, talents and finances to make this project become a reality.

Only to live in Buckhorn can one appreciate the need for this clinic. Buckhorn is 30 miles from Hazard, 30 miles from Jackson, and 18 miles from Booneville. These are the next closest medical facilities. Before the clinic opened, an emergency required 45 minutes to 1 hour of driving over very treacherous mountain roads to reach the nearest medical facility.

Federal funding continued for Buckhorn Clinic, and in 1985 the Department of H.E.W. encouraged a merger of Buckhorn Clinic with MCHC in Whitesburg KY. At that time, Buckhorn became the smallest of five clinics that MCHC managed. The merger brought many positive changes for Buckhorn. A full-time physician was made available for the first time, with additional support staff and a new modular building designed for clinic use and many extra services was provided.

Presently, Buckhorn Medical Clinic continues to be the smallest non-profit MCHC clinic. We are staffed by a full-time Family Practice Specialist. Services offered include but are not limited to: Complete Physical Assessments, Chronic and Acute Disease Management, EKG’s, Laboratory, Family Planning, Well-Child Care, Indigent Patient Medication Program, and referrals to specialists. In addition, a Wellness Center, which has state of the art fitness equipment, is open to the public, free of charge to MCHC patients.
